Telephones were used for communication between the range officer on the mound and the chief butts officer at the targets to maintain safety protocols and to seek clarification of a score for individual shooters. These clarifications were known as 'challenges' where the shooter disputes the score given to him by the person (a marker) that has indicated where the bullet passed through the target. Ex Army field phones were widely used by rifle clubs following WW2. They were gradually replaced by two way radio sets from c1980. The need for telephones and radio sets for communication between the mound and the butts was removed with the introduction of electronic targets.
